Watchtree Nature Reserve
‘Cumbria’s most fascinating nature reserve’

Bird observation hides

Bird Hide

The two bird hides provide excellent views of lagoons, wetlands, reedbeds and meadows. Look out for Goldeneye, Snipe, Little grebe and our resident Mute swans.
Our two hides are wheelchair accessible.

Woodland trails

Woodland Trail

Dedicated way-marked paths connect our two semi-natural woodlands. Why not stop of for a picnic by the pond in Pond wood. This pond is also studied by many schools for environmental education.

Visitor centre

Watchtree nature reserve Visitor Centre

The visitor centre is equipped with conference facilities with an AVX induction hearing loop system, suitable for meetings and educational lectures. In addition, the centre has toilets (Inc disabled) and a wide range of interpretation.

Habitats and wildlife

Habittats

Habitats consist of lowland meadow, woodland, wetland and hedgerow including scrub and reedbed areas. These habitats are specifically targeted at vulnerable species, many of which have shown significant declines in recent years, including; Lapwing, Curlew, Linnet, Skylark, Great crested newt and Brown hare.

Wheels For All (Watchtree Wheelers)

Wheelchairs

Targeted at disadvantaged and disabled persons/groups, our fleet of specially adapted bikes provide opportunities for improving health, fitness and well-being. During spring 2009, new paths will be installed enabling users to explore new areas of the nature reserve. ‘Wheelers’ days are on Fridays… booking essential.
